Warriors Hold On To Victory Over Braves, 17-16

Winter Garden, FL ? The West Orange Warriors defeated the Boone Braves, 18-16, in the season opener for both varsity squads at Ray Screws Field. The 18 goals by WO were the most scored by a Warrior team since February 14, 2006 when they scored 18 in a season opener against Edgewater.

The offensive barrage was led by senior captains Alex Gordon and Chip Mitchel. Gordon used quick dodges from up top to place three shots in the goal and assist on another four scores. In addition, Gordon controlled the face-off X by winning 14 of his 24 face-offs and led the Warriors with 13 ground balls. Fellow midfielder Mitchel led all Warriors with four goals.

The entire Warriors offense flourished with eight players scoring goals along with a team total of 11 assists. Sophomore attacker Dan Crayner came off the bench in the first quarter to spark the offense with an impressive three goals and three assists. Fellow sophomore attackman Gian Rios added four goals on four shots.

The Warriors took a 7-5 advantage into the locker at halftime. On two occasions, the Warriors built their lead to four in the third quarter. However, the Braves battled back in the fourth quarter and brought the deficit to one goal with a minute remaining. The Warriors were able to hold off the Braves? comeback and avenge a loss to Boone in last year?s season opener.

West Orange will host Edgewater on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6 pm.
